Director DeMaio was born on December 25th, 1966 in Newark, New Jersey.
Law Enforcement History
Director DeMaio followed in his father’s footsteps and began his career with the Newark Police Department in 1986, at the age of 19. Director DeMaio worked his way through the ranks of the Department at a rapid pace, becoming the youngest person to achieve each of the ranks he was promoted to. As a Patrolman he worked in the City’s North District and the prestigious Tactical Force. In 1990, he was promoted to Detective where he worked in the Major Crimes Bureau and the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force. In 1992, Director DeMaio was promoted to Sergeant where he worked in the North District and the Narcotics Division until 1995 when he was promoted to Lieutenant. As a Lieutenant he worked again in the North District and as Executive Officer of the East District. In 1999, Director DeMaio was promoted to the rank of Captain where he commanded the South and North Districts, developed and commanded the Safe City Task Force and served as Chief of Staff to the Chief of Police. In 2005, he was promoted to Deputy Chief where he served as Chief of Staff, Chief of Detectives and Chief of Operations for the Department.
Education
Director DeMaio is a graduate of Hanover Park Regional High School in East Hanover and attended Morris County College. During his law enforcement career he has attended numerous police management courses through the Police Executive Research Forum, the Senior Management Institute for Policing, and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and Boston University.
